Production Manager - FRP / Composite Boatbuilding

The Production Manager is responsible for the planning, execution, and control of FRP production at our composite boatbuilding facility. This role leads shop-floor operations against a master production schedule and is accountable for delivering vessels on time, on specification, and within budget—from mold preparation through structural bonding and finishing.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Production Planning & Control

  • Develop and manage the Master Production Schedule aligned with delivery targets
  • Break projects into a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) with defined tasks, sequencing, dependencies, and critical path
  • Drive strict adherence to schedules and productivity benchmarks

2. Execution of FRP Production Processes

  • Oversee all stages of FRP construction, including:
    • Mold preparation and release systems
    • Gelcoat application (thickness and finish control)
    • Lamination (hand layup and vacuum infusion)
    • Core installation (PVC foam and reinforcement zones)
    • Structural bonding (bulkheads, stiffeners, deck-to-hull joints)
  • Enforce approved lamination schedules and method statements

3. Resource & Manpower Management

  • Plan and allocate manpower across laminators, carpenters, finishers, and helpers
  • Monitor labor productivity
  • Optimize crew sizing and eliminate idle time
  • Lead daily coordination meetings with supervisors

4. Material Planning & Coordination

  • Enforce a strict “no materials, no start” policy
  • Coordinate closely with stores based on WBS, BOQ, and schedule
  • Identify and escalate long-lead items early
  • Track material consumption and reduce wastage

5.Daily Monitoring & KPI Management: Review daily production logs and verify actual vs planned output

  • Review daily production logs and validate actual vs planned progress
  • Track key KPIs:
    • Schedule adherence
    • Productivity
    • Rework
    • Material wastage
  • Ensure accurate supervisor reporting
  • Produce weekly and monthly performance reports

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of experience in FRP/composite marine production, including at least 3 years in a production leadership role
  • Strong hands-on expertise in hand layup and vacuum infusion
  • Working knowledge of resin systems, gelcoat defects, cure cycles, and core bonding techniques
  • Proven experience managing production using WBS and KPI-driven performance systems
  • Strong material planning capability (BOQ, MRP logic, long-lead tracking)
  • Sound understanding of chemical and process safety (styrene control, catalyst handling, ventilation, PPE)
  • Proficiency with scheduling tools (MS Project, Primavera, or ERP/MRP systems)
  • Strong leadership and communication skills in a multicultural workforce

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Composite Engineering, Marine Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Naval Architecture
  • NEBOSH IGC or equivalent HSE certification
  • Experience working with classification societies (Lloyd’s, DNV, BV, etc.)
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing / 5S in a composite environment
  • Prior experience in South or Southeast Asian shipyards
